Meta has launched a new feature to address the widespread issue of unauthorised reposts that affect content creators on Instagram and Facebook. Introduced in October 2025, the Content Protection feature empowers creators by providing tools to manage unauthorised use of their Reels.
Content reposting without consent has been a persistent problem for many creators, especially with the rise of Reels. Creators of short, engaging content often find their videos reposted without credit or remuneration, violating copyright and depriving the original creators of potential earnings.
Before the launch of Content Protection, Meta lacked an automated solution akin to YouTube’s Content ID, forcing creators to manually report infringements—a process that was often laborious and ineffective. This gap left many creators exposed to content misappropriation without adequate protection.
The new Content Protection system utilises advanced visual and audio fingerprinting technology to scan all Reels on Facebook and Instagram. Whenever it detects a match with a creator’s recognised content, a notification is sent directly to the creator’s dashboard.
Creators are then able to access key insights, including:
- Accounts that have reposted their content
- Direct links to the infringing posts
- Performance metrics, such as views and interactions
- Revenue generated from these posts
- Specific segments of their videos that are being used without permission
From this information, creators can choose one of three actions: Track, Block, or Release.
- Track: Creators have the option to allow reposting while retaining ownership. The system ensures they receive proper attribution and that any ad revenue generated from the repost is directed back to them. This option facilitates audience growth without compromising on income.
- Block: Creators can choose to block the repost, making it invisible across Facebook and Instagram while not penalising the offending account. This low-conflict approach protects intellectual property without creating disputes.
- Release: If desired, creators can opt to release their copyright claims, permitting the repost to remain live without any attribution or revenue implications. This option is particularly useful for content shared by friends or community members.
A groundbreaking feature of Content Protection is its ability to reveal whether reposted Reels are generating revenue. Creators will have insights into:
- Participation in monetisation programs like Reels Play Bonus or Instagram Subscriptions
- Estimated earnings from advertisements or tips
- Income sources, including subscriptions and virtual coins
This level of transparency enables creators to make informed decisions regarding reposts and to protect themselves from commercial exploitation.
Meta is gradually rolling out the Content Protection feature, primarily available to creators enrolled in official Meta monetisation programs who adhere to community guidelines. Currently, it mainly applies to Reels posted on Facebook and is accessible via Rights Manager on desktop. Plans for mobile application integration and expanded Instagram support are forthcoming.
Unfortunately, smaller creators and newcomers, who are especially vulnerable to repost misuse, have yet to gain access to this protection, limiting the feature’s potential effectiveness in the short term.
Initial feedback has been encouraging, but many creators emphasise the need for stronger enforcement from Meta. Key concerns include:
- The absence of automatic penalties for repeated offenders
- A desire for proactive blocking instead of relying on creator reports
- Incomplete implementation on Instagram, where reposting issues are prevalent
Creators and advocates are urging Meta to:
- Issue automatic warnings to offenders
- Impose sanctions on accounts with multiple violations
- Expand protections to cover all content formats beyond just Reels
The introduction of Content Protection represents a significant shift in Meta’s policy, following years of criticism over inadequate measures to combat content theft. For the eligible creators, this tool provides essential means to regain control over their content and earnings.
However, technology alone is insufficient to eradicate the culture of unauthorised reposting. Meta needs to enhance access, seamlessly integrate Instagram into the system, and enforce stricter penalties to ensure long-term viability. Protecting creators is crucial for nurturing a vibrant creative environment grounded in fairness and respect.
This initiative marks a deeper commitment by Meta to uphold creator rights, but it serves as just the beginning of a larger battle against content piracy.
