Bayobab and Vodacom have unveiled a strategic fibre interconnection at the Chanida Border between Zambia and Mozambique, aimed at enhancing cross-border connectivity and establishing a vital fibre route that connects inland networks to subsea cables along Africa’s eastern and western coasts.

The collaboration was announced over the weekend, highlighting its significance as a major advancement in Africa’s digital transformation. Senior government officials and key industry leaders from both countries attended the event.

This interconnection will facilitate direct international access to the newly completed 2Africa submarine cable system, boost network resilience, and promote digital inclusion throughout Southern Africa. The initiative not only strengthens regional ties by improving cross-border connectivity between Zambia and Mozambique but also supports increased trade and economic collaboration.

Moreover, it aims to enhance digital inclusion by broadening broadband access to underserved and remote communities, according to the partnering companies.

Zambia’s Minister of Technology and Science, Felix Mutati, described the event as a historic milestone in the nation’s journey toward digital transformation. He emphasised that the successful interconnection at Chanida enhances Zambia’s digital reach, linking the country to a total of eight neighbouring nations.

Mutati also lauded the investments and commitment of the MTN digital infrastructure arm and Vodacom Mozambique, and underscored the importance of both governments in fostering an enabling environment through coherent policies, effective legal frameworks, and forward-looking regulations.

Simon Karikari, Managing Director of Vodacom Mozambique, stated, “This partnership fortifies Mozambique’s digital backbone and enhances the capacity needed to meet the growing demand for reliable connectivity. By improving cross-border resilience, we’re accelerating access to high-quality digital services that will drive economic growth and support the government’s goal of providing internet access for all by 2030.”

In a similar vein, Lillian Mutwalo, Managing Director of Bayobab Zambia, remarked, “This interconnection is transformative for Zambia and the region. By establishing a seamless link to the 2Africa cable system, we are positioning Zambia as a connectivity hub, enabling businesses and communities to flourish in the digital economy.”
