SABC+ Celebrates Milestone Of Two Million Users, Paving The Way For Digital Innovation In South Africa

The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) has revealed that its streaming platform, SABC Plus, has officially reached two million registered users.

Initially launched in November 2022, the platform underwent a significant overhaul in July 2024, necessitating a fresh start. Despite this, it achieved this impressive milestone in under two years.

“The platform is not merely a streaming service; it represents a rebirth for public service media in South Africa, reimagined for the digital age,” the broadcaster stated in an announcement. “It symbolises a wealth of opportunities and serves as a foundation for a truly inclusive digital ecosystem to thrive.”

According to SABC COO and interim group executive sponsor for SABC Plus, Lungile Binza, the platform’s remarkable progress reflects the future of public broadcasting.

“This achievement signifies a future where access to information, culture, and creativity transcends geographical and circumstantial boundaries, fostering open sharing among communities,” he noted. “It is an environment where young individuals are empowered to be creators, collaborators, and innovators, rather than just passive consumers.”

Binza emphasised that this success is indicative of cultural pride and economic progress in an increasingly advanced technological landscape.

The SABC credits the rapid growth in active registered users to its engaging content offerings, including sports, as well as a new lineup on SABC 2 featuring the telenovela “Primvile.”

“Users can look forward to exciting innovations, such as gamification through SABC Plus Connect and partnerships with companies like Microsoft South Africa to enhance digital literacy across the nation,” the statement added.

“SABC Plus is committed to meeting the diverse needs of its audience through engaging content and features that ensure a satisfying and enriching viewing experience.”
