Showmax Originals achieved remarkable success at the 2025 Zanzibar International Film Festival (ZIFF), receiving several awards that underscore the platform’s commitment to exceptional African storytelling. The festival, which celebrates global cinema, was held from June 25-29, 2025.

The standout winner was the sci-fi drama “Subterranea,” which clinched the award for Best TV Drama Series in East Africa, triumphing over tough competition from other notable Showmax series, including “Single Kiasi Season 3” and “The Chocolate Empire.” Directed by Likarion Wainaina and written by Brian Munene, “Subterranea” captivated viewers with its gripping tale of eight individuals ensnared in a psychological experiment within an underground bunker.

“This award reflects the dedication, talent, and creativity of the entire ‘Subterranea’ team,” expressed producer Brian Munene. “Our remarkable cast and visionary crew poured their hearts into bringing this bold, original narrative to life. We are truly honoured to receive this recognition at ZIFF and hope it inspires more authentic, daring African storytelling to shine.”

The festival also honoured the legendary Jimmy Gathu for his outstanding role in the crime drama “The Chocolate Empire.” Gathu portrays JB Mauzo, a former tycoon reentering society after prison, as he attempts to rebuild his life and family while covertly managing a high-end escort service from his upscale cigar lounge.

Grace Kahaki, the director and producer of “The Chocolate Empire,” remarked, “Jimmy Gathu’s portrayal of JB Mauzo captures the complexity and depth we aimed to explore in the series. This acknowledgement at ZIFF is a triumph not just for him but for our entire cast and crew. We take pride in showcasing stories that celebrate Nairobi’s vibrancy and the diverse talent within our region.”

Additionally, Showmax Original “Jacob’s Daughters” added to the platform’s accolades, with Kojack Chillo winning Best Actor in a Drama Series – Tanzania.

“To have both a series and a lead actor recognized at such a prestigious festival as ZIFF is a monumental achievement,” stated Nzola Miranda, managing director at MultiChoice Kenya. “This double victory signifies the tremendous talent present in the East African creative industry and reinforces our commitment to being the home for authentic, high-quality African narratives.”

Since its establishment in 1997, the Zanzibar International Film Festival has become a celebrated annual event that showcases films from various regions, fostering cultural exchange and honouring the art of filmmaking. ZIFF continues to inspire and connect global audiences through the allure of cinema.
