Egypt’s Public Broadcaster Takes Omar Khairat’s Honorary Doctorate Ceremony Live

Egyptian Television broadcast the Academy of Arts’ ceremony honouring composer Omar Khairat with an honorary doctorate live on Sunday, 25 October, carrying the event and his accompanying concert across Channel Two and the Egyptian Satellite Channel from 20:00.

The ceremony took place at the Academy’s theatre in the Haram district of Cairo and was presented by Shafky El-Monieri. The Academy’s council, chaired by Dr Nabila Hassan, conferred the degree in recognition of Khairat’s contribution to Egyptian and Arab music and his influence on modern musical composition.

The programme also paid tribute to the legacy of architect and composer Abu Bakr Khairat, the first dean of Egypt’s Conservatoire and the designer of the Academy of Arts’ buildings. The event connected recognition of a contemporary musical figure with the institutional and architectural heritage of Egypt’s arts education sector.

Mohamed Ibrahim El-Gohary, head of the television sector, said the National Media Authority, led by Ahmed El-Meslemani, was committed to delivering the event to the highest artistic and technical broadcast standards. He framed the coverage as part of the authority’s educational and cultural mission, including bringing prominent figures from music and the arts to a broad television audience.

For the broadcasting industry, the event illustrates how public television can use live cultural programming to serve audiences across multiple distribution channels. Simultaneous transmission on a general-interest terrestrial channel and a satellite service extends access beyond a single outlet, while live music and cultural ceremonies provide opportunities to showcase production and transmission capabilities.

The coverage also offers a practical example of how broadcasters can make their public-service remit visible through programming. Rather than relying solely on policy statements, the National Media Authority linked its stated cultural and educational responsibilities to the live presentation of an event celebrating Egyptian musical achievement and arts heritage.

The broadcast does not, on its own, establish a wider change in the authority’s strategy. However, it demonstrates the continuing role of live cultural events in public-service television schedules, combining national cultural recognition with the reach of established broadcast infrastructure.
