Ethiopia: Safaricom Celebrates Major Milestone Of 10 Million Customers – Report

July 2, 2025

A A

Safaricom Ethiopia has achieved a remarkable milestone by signing up 10 million active customers within just 90 days of its launch—an impressive feat four years after entering the Ethiopian market. The company recently announced this success, underscoring its rapid growth and significant investment in local infrastructure, which has been pivotal in expanding its reach nationwide.

This achievement highlights the increasing demand for reliable and inclusive mobile connectivity in Ethiopia, as well as the trust that individuals, families, and businesses have placed in Safaricom.

“Today signifies four years since the government liberalised the telecom sector and granted Safaricom a license. We’ve focused on fast-tracking Ethiopia’s digital transformation by providing inclusive, high-quality connectivity that empowers everyone, everywhere, at all times. Reaching 10 million customers is more than just a statistic—it embodies your trust and partnership in our shared vision for a digital future for Ethiopia,” stated Wim Vanhelleputte, CEO of Safaricom Ethiopia.

Since its inception, Safaricom Ethiopia has invested over US$2,2 billion in telecom and digital infrastructure. Its 4G network currently covers 55% of the population, supported by 3,141 active sites in more than 150 towns and cities. The company boasts 7.1 million active mobile data users, with an average monthly data usage of 6.5GB per user.

In addition to its connectivity efforts, Safaricom Ethiopia has made a substantial local impact. The company has generated over 20,000 indirect jobs and assembled a team of 900 employees, 97% of whom are Ethiopian nationals. It has also contributed more than US$ 870,825 to support educational initiatives and emergency relief efforts. Collaborating with various partners, Safaricom has mobilised US$ 3,8 million to provide digital training programs for young Ethiopians.

With this significant achievement, Safaricom Ethiopia is establishing itself as a key player in one of Africa’s most promising telecommunications markets, where connectivity, inclusion, and digital transformation remain vital for national development.
