Cloudflare CEO Warns Of The Danger Of AI To Content Creators

Matthew Prince, CEO of Cloudflare, has a clear message for content creators: the age of AI is arriving rapidly, and it’s not all positive news.

While artificial intelligence promises greater efficiency and productivity for many workers, Prince is sounding the alarm about its implications for those who earn a living producing online content. In a recent CNBC interview, he warned that AI-driven tools change how people access information, undermining the traditional web economy built around content creation.

Prince warns that AI tools and search engines now give direct answers, cutting out creators and reducing their traffic and income.
“The way people consume information online is changing drastically,” Prince noted. “Instead of visiting websites, users receive answers directly where they search — which cuts creators out of the loop.”

“The engines powering AI rely on original content to function,” Prince stated. “Creators need to assert control. That might mean blocking AI crawlers or demanding payment for access — essentially saying, ‘If you want my content, you’ll need to compensate me for it.'”

Despite these concerns, Prince isn’t against AI. He believes that, when used thoughtfully, AI enhances human capabilities — what he calls giving people “superpowers” at work. At Cloudflare, he says AI is used to support, not replace, employees.

Still, he cautions that creators must be proactive to succeed in this new environment. He predicts that the most valuable content will be original, high-quality, and protected in the AI era.

“This is a critical time,” Prince said. “The value of genuine, original work will rise — but only if creators safeguard it and find sustainable ways to monetise it.”

As the AI and copyright debate heats up, Prince’s warning is clear: adapt or risk being left behind.
