Zimbabwe: Econet Wireless And Ericsson Unite To Propel 5G Connectivity

Econet Wireless Zimbabwe and Ericsson entered into a significant agreement during the Mobile World Congress 2025 in Barcelona. The agreement aims to launch 5G Standalone (SA) capabilities, enhance core network capacity, and incorporate Ericsson’s Cloud Core Exposure Server (CCES). This collaboration signifies a major advancement in Zimbabwe’s digital infrastructure, paving the way for new opportunities for businesses and consumers alike.

Roy Chimanikire, Deputy CEO of Econet Wireless Zimbabwe, emphasised the importance of this partnership, stating, “Our collaboration with Ericsson marks a significant milestone for Econet as we aim to transform the telecommunications landscape in our country. We are eager to enhance our network’s scalability, reliability, and efficiency while unlocking advanced capabilities such as orchestration, automation, and virtualisation.”

The agreement involves the integration of Ericsson’s 5G Core cloud-native network functions (CNFs), which will boost scalability, automation, and efficiency in Econet’s network. Furthermore, by adopting Ericsson’s Cloud Core Exposure Server (CCES), businesses and app developers will gain the ability to connect directly to Econet’s network via APIs, facilitating the creation of innovative services like smart payment systems, improved mobile banking and AI-driven customer support.

Ericsson’s Vice President and Head of Central and Eastern Africa, Alain Maupin, noted that this partnership will prepare Econet for the future of connectivity: “Our state-of-the-art solutions will make the network ready for 5G Standalone and deliver next-generation services that empower Econet to meet growing data demands while ensuring scalable and secure network capabilities. Together, we are charting a course for enhanced connectivity and groundbreaking opportunities in the region, in line with Ericsson’s #AfricaInMotion vision.”

This network upgrade will enhance Econet’s infrastructure’s power and efficiency, making it more future-ready while unlocking new prospects for businesses and individual users. It will also enable the network to automatically resolve issues, leading to fewer service disruptions and improved overall customer performance.

By modernising its network infrastructure, Econet is solidifying its position as a leader in Zimbabwe’s telecommunications sector, ensuring that customers enjoy enhanced services, greater efficiency, and innovative advancements in digital connectivity.
