BMA Webinar: Securing The Signal: Cybersecurity Threats And Defence Strategies For Broadcasters

Broadcasting has always been about reaching audiences reliably, day in and day out. But as the industry moves deeper into digital infrastructure, streaming, cloud-based playout systems, and connected devices, that reliability is facing a threat that didn’t exist a generation ago: cyberattacks.

Today’s broadcasters face a new generation of cyber threats, from ransomware attacks that bring newsroom operations to a standstill to attempts at hijacking live broadcasts. Beyond technical disruption, a successful attack can damage audience trust, expose sensitive data and create opportunities for malicious actors to spread false information using a broadcaster’s identity.

It’s a growing concern across the African broadcasting landscape, and one that’s set to take centre stage at an upcoming executive webinar hosted by Broadcast Media Africa (BMA), titled “Securing the Signal: Cybersecurity Threats and Defence Strategies for Broadcasters,” taking place on Tuesday, 8th September 2026.

As broadcasting becomes increasingly connected, cybersecurity has become a critical operational priority. Bringing together industry experts, this session will examine the growing cybersecurity risks impacting broadcasters and explore how organisations can strengthen their defences, protect critical assets and maintain reliable operations in an increasingly connected media environment.

Speaking ahead of the webinar, Benjamin Pius, CEO and Publisher of Broadcast Media Africa (BMA), stressed just how urgent this conversation has become.

“Broadcasters have always understood the importance of protecting their signal from interference. What’s changed is the nature of that threat. Today, a cyberattack can do more damage in minutes than a technical fault ever could, and the consequences go beyond downtime. It’s about trust. If an audience can’t trust that what they’re watching or hearing is genuinely coming from you, that’s a much harder thing to rebuild than a broken transmitter.”

He added that many broadcasters across the continent are still under-prepared for the scale of the threat.

“A lot of broadcasters, especially smaller and mid-sized ones, still think of cybersecurity as an IT problem rather than a business-critical priority. That mindset needs to shift. This webinar is really about giving broadcasters practical tools and strategies they can start applying immediately, not just theory.”

The webinar comes at a time when cyber threats targeting media organisations are rising globally, and African broadcasters, many of whom are rapidly digitising their operations, are increasingly finding themselves in the crosshairs.

The session will go beyond identifying threats to deliver practical insights broadcasters can apply immediately, from assessing vulnerabilities and strengthening defences to creating greater cybersecurity awareness across their organisations. Speakers will highlight why protecting broadcast operations requires a collective effort that extends beyond technical teams.

As broadcasting becomes more connected and reliant on digital platforms, securing the signal is no longer just an engineering challenge. It is a fundamental issue that affects audience trust, business continuity and the ability of broadcasters across Africa to operate in a rapidly changing environment.
