Botswana Telecoms Corporation (BTC), the state-owned telecommunications provider, is set to expand high-speed satellite connectivity to 61 rural villages nationwide. This initiative aims to promote digital inclusion by providing internet access to schools, clinics, and community centres.
In addition, BTC is working on connecting 105 areas across Botswana as part of its ongoing expansion efforts.
The announcement came as BTC released its interim results, revealing revenue of US$55.64 million for the half-year ended September 30. This reflects a 10% increase compared to the same period last year, with an 8% rise in data usage driven by growing demand for internet services and mobile money.
BTC credited its strong financial performance to continuous investment in network enhancements, despite facing rising spectrum license costs and increased debtor impairments. Profit before tax reached US$10 million, demonstrating resilience amidst these challenges.
“This performance indicates sustained momentum in our mobile money and digital services,” BTC commented, highlighting the company’s ongoing transformation journey.
The corporation reiterated its commitment to advancing Botswana’s digital landscape through innovative initiatives that enhance the customer experience, improve network quality, and foster greater digital and financial inclusion.
Plans also include enhancements to its mobile money platform, designed to streamline user onboarding and create a more intuitive experience. Furthermore, BTC intends to increase the number of SMEGA Pay acceptance points by introducing new payment methods, including QR code functionality and tap-to-pay options.
