The Governments of Tanzania and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have recently discussed advancing the National Fibre Optic Backbone Project. This initiative aims to establish an extensive fibre optic network extending to the province of Kalemie in the DRC, traversing Lake Tanganyika. This project is a significant step toward enhancing digital connectivity and fostering regional integration between the two nations.
The primary objective is accelerating digital transformation within both countries while bolstering communication infrastructure across the East African Community (EAC) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC). By linking Tanzania and the DRC through a high-capacity fibre optic connection, the project is set to improve broadband access, encourage cross-border collaboration, and stimulate economic development through technology.
A recent meeting to assess the project’s progress occurred at the TTCL Corporation headquarters in Dar es Salaam. This important meeting featured TTCL’s Director General, Mr Moremi Marwa, alongside a delegation from the DRC headed by SOCOF’s Director General, Mr Prosper Ghislain. Representatives from Tanzania’s Ministry of Information, Communication, and Information Technology, led by the Director of ICT Infrastructure, Mr Leo Magomba, were also in attendance.
The initiative holds great promise for enhancing digital inclusion in the DRC by facilitating better connectivity for its citizens and fostering the development of a digital economy. Through its Ministry of Information, Communication, and Information Technology, the Tanzanian government has reaffirmed its commitment to the successful and timely execution of the project, recognising its crucial role in strengthening regional communication networks and promoting technological advancement in both countries.
This partnership highlights the increasing significance of cross-border infrastructure in creating a connected and digitally empowered Africa.
