Nigerian Thriller ‘The Weekend’ Launches On HBO Max, Expanding Nollywood’s Global Reach

The highly anticipated Nigerian psychological thriller, The Weekend, is now streaming on HBO Max across Central and Eastern Europe, marking a pivotal moment for Nollywood. Produced by Trino Motion Pictures, this film is among the first independently created Nigerian thrillers to secure an international distribution deal with a major streaming platform, reflecting the rising global interest in Nigerian narratives.

Directed by Daniel Oriahi and produced by Uche Okocha, The Weekend follows Nikiya, played by Uzoamaka Power, an orphan visiting her fiancé, Luke (Bucci Franklin), for the first time. What starts as a routine family introduction quickly becomes a chilling psychological thriller, revealing unsettling traditions and deep-seated secrets. The cast also boasts notable performances from Meg Otanwa, Keppy Ekpenyong-Bassey, Gloria Anozie-Young, Damilola Ogunsi, and Ghanaian actor James Gardiner.

The film’s availability on HBO Max in regions such as Poland, the Czech Republic, Romania, and Hungary introduces a wider audience to the unique storytelling style emerging from Nigeria, which increasingly integrates traditional African narratives with contemporary filmmaking practices.

Nollywood, recognised as one of the largest film industries in the world by production volume, has gained significant international visibility through film festivals and streaming platforms in recent years. The Weekend premiered at the prestigious Tribeca Film Festival in 2024, showcasing a rare opportunity for an independent Nigerian film at such a recognised New York event. Following this, it continued to gain momentum, with selections at notable festivals such as the BFI London Film Festival and the Screamfest Horror Film Festival in the U.S., where it has garnered critical acclaim.

The film’s festival journey has translated to accolades on the global stage, including the coveted Best Film “Monster Award at the Monsters Fantastic Film Festival and multiple wins at the Africa Movie Academy Awards, where it received 16 nominations, including Best Film and Best Screenplay.

The HBO Max deal illustrates the growing global appetite for Nollywood films, particularly in the thriller genre. Mr Okocha, managing director of Trino Motion Pictures, views this distribution agreement as a landmark achievement for both his company and the wider Nigerian filmmaking community. He emphasised how the film’s themes resonate globally while still presenting a uniquely African perspective.

This groundbreaking deal reflects Trino Motion Pictures’ commitment to producing high-quality films that share rich African stories and help position Nigerian independent cinema more firmly within the international film distribution landscape.
