Rwanda Set To Enhance Nationwide Starlink Internet Access

Rwanda has entered into a significant partnership with SpaceX to enhance the availability of Starlink satellite internet throughout the nation. The project will see the installation of the first dedicated Starlink gateway by the end of 2025.

This milestone was established following discussions between Rwanda’s Minister of ICT and Innovation, Hon. Yves Iradukunda, and senior executives from SpaceX. Together, they reviewed current operations successfully serving around 5,000 users in Rwanda. Their discussions mainly focused on expanding internet access nationwide, ensuring that more communities can benefit from reliable, high-speed connectivity.

A notable outcome of these talks was finalising a spectrum agreement with the Rwanda Utilities Regulatory Authority (RURA) and the Rwanda Space Agency (RSA). This agreement paves the way for installing the first Starlink gateway, which will be integrated into Rwanda’s national fibre infrastructure. The new gateway is anticipated to significantly improve speed, capacity, and overall reliability, enhancing internet coverage in urban and rural areas.

The agreement also strongly emphasises promoting digital inclusion, with plans specifically aimed at connecting schools and underserved communities. Officials referenced lessons learned from pilot projects conducted in Rwanda, as well as successful Starlink implementations in nations like Mexico and Niger, as valuable models for this initiative. Additionally, the partnership will investigate innovative financing options and collaboration with donors to ensure the long-term sustainability of the service.

The expansion of Starlink is not only about closing the digital divide; it is also expected to support vital sectors, including agriculture, healthcare, and rural service delivery. This initiative aligns with Rwanda’s broader strategy of leveraging satellite technology as part of its national digital transformation objectives.
