YAOUNDE, CAMEROON – The Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon arrived back home to a hero’s welcome in Yaounde on Monday after winning the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations for the first time.

The team’s plane was greeted with the customary water-cannon reception upon arrival at Yaounde Nsimalen International Airport, before the players alighted to hoist the continental trophy. Enthusiastic fans in national colours welcomed the players amid dancing, waving flags, and escorting the players’ bus on decorated motorcycles.

Cameroon became the first continental champions ever, beating Malawi 3-0 in the final match held in Morocco on Sunday after three runners-up appearances in 22 years.

“We are truly so proud of this success, of our triumph as Lionesses,” fan Bernard Dikoume remarked. “It is a very special moment because we have waited for this moment so long, and today we can finally celebrate.”

This success marks the end of an amazing campaign for the team, which at first failed to qualify but got another chance after CAF increased the number of teams in the competition from 12 to 16. Afterwards, Cameroon defeated Nigeria in the quarterfinals and Morocco in the semifinals, qualifying for the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
