BBC World Service Transitions From Satellite To IP-Based Distribution

The BBC World Service is transitioning its global distribution network from satellite to an IP-based delivery system, collaborating with Encompass Digital Media and Zixi in this significant upgrade.

The initial phase of this transformation was completed by the end of March, achieving full IP distribution for partners in Europe. In the future, the project will roll out across the Americas, Pacific, Africa, and Asia.

TheUtilising BBC World Service is utilising Encompass’s Altitude Connect platform and integrating Zixi’s advanced IP delivery technology alongside Encompass’s global broadcast cloud solution, Altitude Media Cloud.

“Moving to IP distribution for the BBC World Service marks a pivotal advancement in our goal to modernise how we connect with audiences worldwide,” stated Nigel Fry, Director of Distribution for International Services at BBC News. “With the expertise of Encompass and Zixi, we are committed to delivering reliable news and information to our viewers, enhancing both reach and security.”

This transition will allow the BBC World Service to distribute content more efficiently across digital and broadcast platforms and provide consistent service in areas where satellite coverage may be scarce or prohibitively expensive.

Furthermore, the shift to IP technology supports tailored content delivery, enabling the BBC to adapt more swiftly to evolving market conditions and audience preferences.

Marc Bruce, CEO of Encompass Digital Media, emphasised the importance of this project: “This initiative significantly advances the modernisation of broadcasting infrastructure, promoting greater flexibility, cost-effectiveness, and security. By transitioning away from satellite, we empower the BBC to engage its global audience with unparalleled agility and accuracy.”

Marc Aldrich, CEO of Zixi, remarked, “Our technology guarantees high levels of reliability, security, and scalability, allowing the BBC World Service to extend its reach while preserving its standing as a leader in global broadcasting. This project highlights the future of content delivery, where IP distribution sets the benchmark for efficiency and innovation.”

As part of this migration, hundreds of radio and television partners will be upgraded from specialised receiver hardware to more accessible, software-based solutions.
