Digital Radio: Assessing Africa’s Broadcasters’ Ability to Meet Their Mandates

As Africa embraces the next phase of its broadcasting evolution, the transition to digital audio broadcasting (DAB) has emerged as a pivotal area of focus. The upcoming Radio and Digital Sound Broadcasting Summit – Africa 2025, scheduled for 24 – 25 June 2025 in Johannesburg, South Africa, provides a timely opportunity to assess how well the continent’s public and private broadcasters are positioned to meet their mandates while integrating DAB technologies into their operations.

The core mandate of many African broadcasters—particularly public service entities—remains rooted in ensuring universal access to information, promoting local culture, and supporting national development. However, the shift to digital audio platforms introduces new challenges and opportunities. While DAB promises improved audio quality, spectrum efficiency, and the ability to broadcast more channels using less bandwidth, it also demands substantial investments in infrastructure, regulatory alignment, and audience readiness.

Speaking on the importance of this transition, Mr Benjamin Pius, CEO of Broadcast Media Africa, commented, “Digital Audio Broadcasting represents a significant opportunity for African broadcasters to extend reach, improve quality, and deliver more diverse programming. However, to succeed, a holistic approach must consider the technology, institutional capacity, content readiness, and, most importantly, the audience’s needs. This summit offers a crucial platform to reflect, re-strategise, and collaborate.”

As stakeholders gather in Johannesburg for the 6th Edition of the Radio and Digital Sound Broadcasting Summit, the spotlight will be on forging practical pathways to strengthen broadcasters’ capacity while unlocking digital radio’s full potential. The conversation promises to shape the future of sound broadcasting across the continent.
