Nigeria has suspended new regulatory measures for digital platforms and online intermediaries until a unified regulatory framework is in place. The Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy wants to maintain the status quo while a harmonised national policy is being developed. Minister Dr Bosun Tijani said regulatory coordination is essential for legal clarity, investment, and consumer trust.
The announcement came after a strategic meeting between the Ministry and key stakeholders, including the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), and the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC).
A Joint Technical Coordination Committee will be established, comprising representatives from the NCC, NITDA, and NDPC. They will serve under the Minister’s guidance, fostering technical discussions and engaging with stakeholders across industry, civil society, and academia. Their mission is to draft recommendations for a coherent national governance framework that addresses cross-cutting matters in the digital economy.
