CAIRO, EGYPT – Several thousand members of Sufi sects came together in Cairo to participate in the festive street procession to mark Mawlid al-Nabawi, the birthday of Prophet Mohammed.
The Sufis in Egypt arranged the yearly procession, which began after afternoon prayers at Sidi Saleh al-Jaafari Mosque. Devotees walked on foot through the streets of Cairo toward Al-Hussein Mosque, singing devotional songs, beating drums, and waving ceremonial flags.
The colourful procession featured performing arts as part of the event, with Tanoura performers dancing in circles within the crowd. To ensure the safe conduct of the large-scale event, security arrangements were also made along the route, which necessitated the closure of Al-Azhar Street.
The day’s events concluded with a celebration organised by the General Sheikhdom of Sufi Orders in the evening, in which religious scholars and believers took part in long prayers, dhikr, and praising the Prophet Muhammad.
Mawlid al-Nabawi is one of the most important religious ceremonies in Egypt. Similarly, various Sufi orders held processions and gatherings to commemorate the day of 12th Rabi ul Awal 1448 A.H.
