Disney is reportedly weighing a free tier for Disney+ as it goes head-to-head with Netflix, YouTube, and TikTok.
During a recent town hall meeting, Disney’s Product and Technology Chief, Adam Smith, hinted at plans for a free tier of content but did not provide a specific timeline. This initiative aligns with Disney’s broader strategy to make content more accessible, as evidenced by the company’s existing presence on free platforms such as Tubi and YouTube.
A free tier on Disney+ would make sense given where viewers are already headed — and it’d drive more engagement and ad dollars, too. Disney’s already pulled this off with free-to-air TV, so there’s no reason it couldn’t work in streaming.
Recent industry report shows that Disney+ is already introducing several “Streams,” which are channels offering specific content, and plans to expand this feature both domestically and internationally.
Plus, with Hulu and Disney+ set to merge in the U.S., and new features like vertical video and ESPN Unlimited rolling out, Disney+ is clearly becoming the hub for everything Disney does online. A free tier would only strengthen that — pulling in more users, some of whom would eventually pay to upgrade.”
According to industry watchers, the trend of free streaming platforms is growing – with other majors such as FOX and Amazon investing in similar models. Media houses such as Paramount+ and Apple TV also offer limited free access to select titles, showcasing the demand for budget-friendly viewing options.
A free Disney+ tier looks like an easy call. Viewer habits are already trending that way, and it would bring Disney more engagement and ad revenue in the process — which isn’t new territory for the company either. Free—to—air TV has worked for Disney for years. There’s every reason to think the same model translates to streaming.
