The Egyptian independent feature film Perfumed With Mint is now available to stream for free on Aflamuna, a non-profit platform dedicated to promoting independent Arab cinema. The film will be available for a limited time, allowing a broader audience to experience one of Egypt’s recent acclaimed arthouse productions.
Directed by Emmy Award-winning cinematographer Muhammed Hamdy, Perfumed With Mint tells the story of Bahaa, a lovesick physician, and his close friend Mahdy. Their journey unfolds in a surreal dystopian landscape where mint leaves inexplicably sprout from Mahdy’s body. This peculiar occurrence draws the attention of dangerous pursuers, compelling the duo to seek shelter in abandoned buildings while confronting external dangers and the haunting memories of their past.
Merging elements of surrealism with psychological drama, the film delves into themes of paranoia, trauma, and the collective memory of a generation affected by violence. Its striking visual style, characterised by shadowy scenes and disorienting perspectives, has garnered international recognition at various film festivals.
Perfumed With Mint had its world premiere in the Critics’ Week section of the 2024 Venice Film Festival and has since been showcased at numerous prestigious festivals, including the Toronto International Film Festival, solidifying its status within the global independent film scene.
The film’s addition to Aflamuna supports the platform’s goal of making independent Arab cinema more accessible. Aflamuna offers free streaming of carefully selected films from the Arab region, while also championing filmmakers and highlighting narratives that address contemporary social, political, and cultural issues.
