South African artists are proudly showcasing their talents on the global stage at the renowned Cannes Film Festival, which is currently taking place in Cannes, France, from May 12 to 23, 2026.

As one of the most prestigious entertainment events worldwide, the Cannes Film Festival serves as a prime platform for international cinema, attracting a diverse array of filmmakers, producers, and industry professionals each year.

This year, the South African presence is vibrant, with notable figures such as Nomzamo Mbatha and Tarina Patel sharing their experiences from the glamorous festival on social media.

Mbatha, who has developed a successful career in Hollywood alongside her humanitarian efforts, attended the Cannes screening of director Jeanne Herry’s film “Garance.” Meanwhile, Patel has been documenting her elegant red-carpet moments against the stunning backdrop of the French Riviera.

Reality TV star and DJ Eva Modika also graced the Cannes red carpet, emphasising that her presence is about more than just the glitz. “I’m here to celebrate the magic of cinema, connect with inspiring creatives globally, and fully immerse myself in the unique energy that Cannes brings,” she expressed. “It’s a rare space where storytelling is revered at its highest level. Among the many major premieres this year, including ‘Fast & Furious,’ I’m also eager to discover hidden gems and support bold new voices. I had the opportunity to watch the Korean film ‘GUN-CHE,’ directed by Yeon Sang-ho, on May 15, and it was an unforgettable experience.”

South African filmmakers are also gaining recognition at the festival. Director Dane Dodds is presenting his documentary project, “RE: COLLECTION,” at the Marché du Film. Selected as one of the 11 Spotlighted Projects at Cannes Docs, this film explores profound themes of restitution, memory, and historical repair, with support from the National Film and Video Foundation of South Africa.

Additionally, writer Zoe Ramushu is nominated for the Impact Leadership Award at the Screen International Global Production Awards for the third consecutive year. Film producer Tshepiso Chipaka Phiri is also recognised in the same category, having contributed to significant productions such as “uBettina Wethu,” “The Woman King,” and “The Umbrella Men.”

With their combined talents, South African artists are making a notable impact at Cannes, celebrating cinema and forging connections that transcend borders.
