BMA Feature: Chadian Health Teams Step Up Efforts To Contain Cholera Outbreak

N’DJAMENA, Chad –  In an effort to control the outbreak of cholera that has killed 13 people and infected 239 others across the country, field operations in all regions of Chad are being ramped up rapidly. Teams are conducting massive interventions in homes and public places through spraying, disinfection and sanitisation.

“In N’Djamena, where the outbreak started on 21 July, teams in protective clothing are being dispatched to spray areas affected by cholera, including the streets and waste disposal sites,” says Nguetora Guiradoumadji, Cholera Incident Manager.

“The number of cases in the N’Djamena outbreak, which started on 21 July, is currently 94. Unfortunately, eight deaths have been recorded from the 94 cases. As of now, five are in hospitals, and 81 have recovered,” says Guiradoumadji.

“Once the case appears, we immediately go straight to the house and do the disinfection of the house and toilets, and we do the sensitisation as well,” stated a Health and Sanitation Agent on the ground.

Containment efforts have expanded beyond the capital. In the Lake region, the affected districts have reported 83 cases and two deaths.

This outbreak comes on the heels of a massive outbreak in 2025 when, according to the WHO, the number of cases reported was over 1,400 and fatalities stood at 90 by late August. Cholera spreads very fast through contaminated food and water and thus poses great dangers to communities without access to safe drinking water.
