Malawi: Regulator Initiates Major Telecommunications Tower Expansion

This year, Malawi is set to enhance its telecommunications infrastructure by constructing additional towers nationwide to improve coverage.

The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) and the Public Private Partnership Commission (PPPC) are gearing up for this significant rollout.

Patrick Kabambe, CEO of the PPPC, stated that this initiative aims to support the regulator in ensuring connectivity for all Malawians. “Very soon, the Commission and MACRA will install 98 new towers throughout the country, which will greatly enhance the quality of service,” he noted during a courtesy meeting in Lilongwe on Wednesday.

The PPPC serves as Malawi’s agency for implementing public-private partnerships, primarily focusing on accelerating infrastructure development through the utilisation of private investment.

Mayamiko Nkoloma, acting director general of MACRA, emphasised the importance of collaboration among various sectors to bolster Malawi’s digital ecosystem. “Although different sectors are making strides toward the digital agenda, progress is hindered by the tendency to operate in silos, leading to unnecessary duplication of efforts,” Nkoloma pointed out.

In relation to the tower expansion, he added, “collaboration is essential here. Engaging with institutions like the Malawi University of Science and Technology can inspire young innovators to develop content or applications that benefit all Malawians.”
