Nigerian filmmaker Paul Lasisi’s film Òkolà has won Africa’s Best Independent Film award at the 2026 All African Independent Film Festival (AAIFF Africa), which concluded in Kigali, Rwanda, on 17 October. The recognition places the Nigerian production at the centre of a festival celebrating independent filmmaking from across the continent. (The New Times; AAIFF Africa)
The film follows a young woman haunted by a mysterious scar that has shaped her troubled life. Her search for its origins leads her towards a discovery about her identity and destiny, combining personal mystery with a story of self-discovery.
Held from 15 to 17 October at the French Institute of Rwanda in Kigali, the festival brought together 19 films from 14 countries. Its selection spanned dramatic features and shorts, documentaries, experimental films, music videos and student productions, highlighting the range of storytelling emerging from Africa’s independent film sector. Other recognised filmmakers included Ivere Hounkpatin, whose At Sea, Without Support won Africa’s Best Independent Film Director award. Hassan El Souhail received the cinematography award for With the Wind, while Omar Garby won for editing with HĀL. Senegalese actress Seynabou Kane and actor Tumelo Motsiri were recognised for their performances in Alone Against All and Silent Grief, respectively.
For African filmmakers, festivals such as AAIFF Africa offer opportunities to gain industry recognition, connect with audiences beyond their home markets and build professional networks. These platforms are particularly important for independent productions that often operate outside the financing, distribution and promotional structures available to larger studios.
The festival’s hybrid format, which included an online component, also offered a route to reach audiences beyond the physical event. As African film industries seek wider regional and international distribution, the combination of festival recognition and digital access can help independent titles build visibility and create further opportunities for their creators.
