Kenya’s ICT Sector Undergoes Major Reforms To Align With Global Standards

Kenya is updating its ICT landscape to align with global trends, marking the first major reforms in 26 years. The Sector Working Group (SWG) recently submitted a crucial report to the Ministry of Information, Communications, and the Digital Economy outlining policy and legislative reforms necessary to bring Kenya’s ICT sector up to international standards.

John Tanui, the principal secretary of the State Department for ICT and Digital Economy, highlighted the report’s primary recommendations, which focus on enhancing innovation, talent development, cyber security, and digital infrastructure.

Recognizing the dynamic nature of ICT, Tanui emphasized the need for change. Consequently, the ministry has introduced new ICT directorates to address sector demands. Additionally, President William Ruto’s government plans to establish a Continental Centre of Excellence to enhance the skills of public service professionals.

Cabinet Secretary Margaret Ndung’u of the Ministry of Information, Communications and the Digital Economy received the SWG report on Monday. The SWG, formed in September last year, was tasked with evaluating existing policies, legislative frameworks, and operational structures within the ICT sector.
