JUBA, SOUTH SUDAN — “The maiden South Sudan Women’s Premier League was unveiled on Saturday in Juba, in a first-of-its-kind initiative for female football in the nation. Twelve teams are participating in the new league.”
The tournament aims to give women a chance to play regularly and help the women’s game develop quickly.
Clubs involved in the tournament are Juba Queens, Munuki Ladies, Yei Joint Stars, Bentiu City, Malakia, Kator, Wajuma, Nile Eagles, Al-Salam, Atlabara Ladies, Simba, and Al-Merrikh Juba.
Festivities at the stadium featured live musical performances, player warm-ups, and an energetic atmosphere as teams took to the pitch.
“It’s a great feeling; it brings us every happiness that we wanted,” said Sumaya Maya, a player for Yei Joint Stars. “We really wanted to have these competitions in South Sudan so we, as women, could grow in South Sudan; we could be like the boys.”
Amuja Fasara of Juba Queen FC added: “We’ve not only come to participate, but compete as well.”
Lemi William James, Chairman of Yei Joint Stars, highlighted the league’s significance in elevating local playing standards and creating opportunities to compete internationally, particularly across East Africa.
“This has been a long-awaited dream,” said Bak Athian Bak Madut, Secretary General of the South Sudan Football Association.
Chairperson Susan John confirmed that FIFA’s official support enabled the league to launch successfully after earlier procedural and sponsorship delays.
