Egypt Regulator Suspends Seven TV Shows In Crackdown On Content Breach

September 25, 2026

A A

Egypt’s Supreme Council for Media Regulation has suspended seven television programmes broadcast on satellite channels Al Shams and Heya, escalating its crackdown on programming that breaches content and commercial rules.

The regulator cited violations including the promotion of superstition, unverified historical claims, and the integration of advertising for unregistered food products into editorial programming.

The action is part of a broader campaign targeting bayaa al-hawa — the leasing of airtime to external producers who use programme slots for sponsored content presented as editorial material.

The suspensions follow the Council’s recent audit of co-production agreements. A second batch of joint-production programmes is now under review, with further regulatory decisions expected next week.

For broadcasters, production companies and airtime partners, the move highlights increasing regulatory scrutiny of outsourced programming and the compliance risks that can arise when commercial interests are embedded within editorial content.
