A new Hausa-language media platform, Mahanga TV, has launched in Kano, Nigeria, combining television broadcasting, original content production and digital distribution as it seeks to bring Northern Nigerian stories and creative talent to audiences across the country and internationally.
Operating under Mahanga Media and Productions Ltd., Mahanga TV is available as a Free-to-Air service on the AMOS-17 satellite and will deliver a mix of news, current affairs, drama, film, music, culture and entertainment.
The platform was established with a particular focus on increasing the visibility of stories and creative talent from Northern Nigeria.
Founder and CEO Nuhu Abdullahi Balarabe said the platform was created in response to the region’s depth of storytelling, cultural heritage and creative talent.
“Mahanga TV was established from a deep conviction that Northern Nigeria has a wealth of stories, talent, culture and perspectives that deserve to be told with professionalism, creativity and global relevance,” Balarabe said.
The broadcaster’s programming slate includes talk and discussion formats such as Labaran Yau, Sahel Circle, Kano After Dark and Arewa Dialogues, alongside current-affairs programmes including Mahanga Newshour, Northern Report, Frontline and Market Day.
Mahanga TV also plans to develop drama and film productions rooted in Hausa and Northern Nigerian experiences, while providing opportunities for local writers, directors, actors, journalists, musicians and other creative professionals.
Beyond traditional broadcasting, the company is building a multi-platform distribution strategy spanning online broadcasting, social media and live streaming. A dedicated mobile application for iOS and Android is also under development.
Mahanga Media and Productions has established its production base in Farm Centre, Tarauni, Kano, with facilities including television studios, editing and post-production suites, audio recording booths and a live-streaming control room. The company says its production infrastructure includes HD cameras, professional lighting and audio systems, live-streaming equipment and broadcast transmission facilities.
The platform’s broader strategy reflects the continuing shift in African media consumption towards a combination of linear television, digital platforms, social media and mobile services.
For Mahanga TV, this multi-platform approach is intended to extend the reach of Hausa-language content beyond its traditional geographic audience while creating new distribution opportunities for Northern Nigerian productions.
“We are proud to be born in Kano, but our ambition is to take the stories and voices of Northern Nigeria to audiences across Nigeria and the world,” Balarabe said.
The company describes its positioning as “Born in Kano. Built for the world,” reflecting its ambition to build a modern Hausa media operation capable of combining local storytelling with wider digital and broadcast distribution.
