Kenya and France have taken a significant step forward by signing a cooperation agreement to enhance internet access for households, public facilities, and digital hubs as part of the Kenya Digital Transformation and Connectivity Enhancement Project.
This agreement was signed in the presence of President William Ruto of Kenya and President Emmanuel Macron of France, emphasising the two nations’ commitment to fostering digital transformation, inclusive connectivity, and expanding digital infrastructure. John Tanui, principal secretary for Kenya’s State Department for Information and Communication Technology and the Digital Economy, highlighted that this partnership marks a pivotal moment in bolstering cooperation between Kenya and France across ICT, innovation, digital skills development, and the creation of connected digital ecosystems.
The agreement is part of a broader set of 11 cooperation pacts between the two governments, also witnessed by both presidents during a ceremony in Nairobi.
Tanui remarked on the enduring diplomatic relationship between Kenya and France, dating back to 1963, the year Kenya gained independence from Britain. He expressed optimism about the continued deepening of this partnership, which aims to benefit citizens in both countries.
The signing of these agreements was framed within the overarching theme of “Enhancing Kenya–France Strategic Partnership for Shared Prosperity.” Alongside the connectivity initiative, the agreements encompass various sectors, including agriculture, meteorological services, port infrastructure, and the blue economy, including fisheries.
