GOMA, DRC – A 23-year-old triathlete from Goma named Miguel Masaisai has officially started his latest biking adventure titled “Pedalling for Peace”. The mission behind this journey is to cross the African continent and spread a message of solidarity around the globe.
Departing from his home city on Friday, Masaisai was accompanied by his only travelling companion, his sports bike, as he set out to travel through 17 nations to finally reach Rabat, Morocco. Masaisai, who successfully covered 7,000 kilometres to Cape Town back in 2025, has as much cycling experience as any other athlete.
Coming from the strife-ridden eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Masaisai’s undertaking is truly significant to him. “It gives me courage to prove that there is not only war in Congo, but we can also do great things despite all the fighting,” he commented.
The tour has received substantial recognition locally and internationally. According to sports commentator Nzungu Shema, “Sport creates unity and fosters peace among communities, and in many cases, sports activities are used to foster understanding of peace at a regional level.”
Masaisai’s cycling adventure serves as a powerful representation of youth’s ability to transcend differences. ‘Pedalling for Peace’ is not only an athletic endeavour but a compelling call for peace.
