Dr John Asein, the Director-General of the Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC), has emphasised the importance of strengthening collaboration with MultiChoice Nigeria Ltd. to foster sustainable development and create a supportive environment for investors and content creators in Nigeria’s creative sector.
During a courtesy visit to the NCC headquarters in Abuja by the CEO of MultiChoice Nigeria Ltd., Mrs Kemi Omotosho, Asein congratulated her on her recent appointment and expressed confidence in her ability to bolster the country’s media and entertainment landscape.
He noted that this meeting offered an opportunity to deepen strategic collaboration on pivotal issues affecting the growth and sustainability of Nigeria’s creative economy. Asein acknowledged MultiChoice’s significant contributions to broadcasting infrastructure, the promotion of local content, and the enhancement of the global visibility of Nigerian creative works.
He pointed out that MultiChoice’s plan for profitable growth could improve operational efficiency and customer experience while strengthening compliance with copyright laws.
A balanced copyright system is crucial for the development of the creative sector, Asein asserted, as it protects creators, secures investors, and ensures lawful access to content amidst a rapidly digitalising landscape.
However, he raised concerns about inconsistent legal interpretations of the use of subscription broadcast services in commercial spaces such as hotels. The varying court rulings on whether such use is considered a private or public performance have created market uncertainty, prompting Asein to call for clearer licensing guidelines and regulatory support.
Additionally, he stressed the need for stronger licensing frameworks to define broadcasters’ and collective management organisations’ rights and responsibilities. He also highlighted the increasing threat of digital piracy, including illegal IPTV services, unauthorised streaming platforms, and unauthorised signal redistribution.
