Emergency response teams from across the globe have mobilised to support Mozambique as severe flooding continues to impact large parts of the country following weeks of heavy rainfall.
The accompanying video captures key moments from ongoing rescue and relief operations, including footage of a South African Air Force helicopter delivering essential aid and assisting stranded communities in hard-to-reach, flood-affected areas. The aerial operations highlight the scale of the devastation and the critical role of air support in reaching isolated locations.
Speaking during the mission, South African Air Force Sergeant Muller described the aircraft as a symbol of hope for communities cut off by floodwaters, underscoring the humanitarian focus of the operation.
Mozambique’s government has declared a nationwide emergency in response to what authorities have described as the worst flooding in the country’s history. International rescue teams from Brazil, South Africa, the European Union and the United Kingdom have joined local emergency services in life-saving efforts.
More than 644,000 people have been affected across the provinces of Maputo, Gaza and Sofala, with at least 52 fatalities confirmed. Tens of thousands of homes remain submerged, critical road infrastructure has been severely damaged, and vast areas of farmland and livestock have been lost, further compounding the humanitarian crisis.
Relief operations are ongoing as authorities and international partners continue to prioritise rescue, food distribution and access to affected communities.
