Botswana is making significant progress in discussions to potentially host the regional internet exchange for the Southern African Development Community (SADC), which would enhance its role as the main digital gateway for the bloc.
The national fibre network operator, Botswana Fibre Network (BoFiNet), is collaborating closely with the SADC Secretariat on this initiative.
Keabetswe Segole, the CEO of BoFiNet, noted that the competition to host the internet exchange is set against the backdrop of the extensive fibre network built over the past 12 years. This network includes multiple undersea cables and a robust terrestrial network that connects through South Africa and Namibia.
Segole emphasised that this extensive infrastructure, along with the recently established Digital Delta Data Centre, establishes a “world-class ecosystem” that positions Botswana as a viable entrance point into the SADC region.
“We aim to host the SADC regional internet exchange right here in Botswana,” Segole remarked, expressing optimism about securing the opportunity during the launch of the Digital Delta Data Centre.
He mentioned that BoFiNet and a competitor from Zimbabwe have reached the final evaluation stage for this project, indicating a competitive selection process.
Additionally, Segole highlighted the significance of the data centre within global infrastructure, noting that it opens doors for small- to medium-sized enterprises, including content creators and e-commerce businesses.
“Given Botswana’s strategic location within the SADC region, our data centre serves as an ideal peering point for clients from the countries to the north,” he concluded.
