Airtel Africa Successfully Tests High-Speed Satellite Internet On Fast-Moving Train

In a significant advancement for rail connectivity across the continent, Airtel Africa has successfully tested satellite internet on a moving train in sub-Saharan Africa. This achievement marks a new milestone in ensuring high-speed internet access in even the most remote areas.

The company has demonstrated that reliable, high-speed internet can be delivered across challenging terrains—specifically, a stretch of 669 kilometres filled with dense forests where traditional cellular networks and fibre optics fall short.

Powered by Airtel Satellite for Business and the OneWeb low-earth orbit (LEO) satellite constellation from Eutelsat, the testing results show that internet connectivity was maintained throughout the journey, even in heavily forested regions. During the tests, download speeds reached up to 100 Mbps, with upload speeds of 20 Mbps, adequate for operational needs and passenger use with multiple devices. This performance aligns closely with the trial’s traffic plan, validating the system’s capacity for delivering consistent internet connectivity on the move.

Looking ahead, Airtel emphasises that with dependable internet access, rail operators stand to gain benefits such as real-time monitoring, predictive maintenance, and quicker emergency responses. Additionally, passengers could enjoy enhanced travel experiences with on-board Wi-Fi, digital ticketing, real-time travel updates, and access to entertainment streaming.

Airtel, in collaboration with Eutelsat/OneWeb, is set to expand its Airtel Satellite for Business services in Nigeria, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Zambia, Madagascar, and Gabon. The aim is to bring high-speed internet connectivity to some of Africa’s most isolated regions.
