ZEE Embraces Multilingual Strategy For Global Expansion

ZEE5 is embarking on an ambitious journey to enhance its global presence by focusing on multilingual content, marking a significant shift in its strategic direction. The Indian streaming platform, under the leadership of Amit Goenka, is revitalising its brand with the new motto, “Apni Bhasha, Apni Kahaniyan” (Multiple Languages, Infinite Stories), which reflects a return to its roots after years of concentration on Hindi-language content.

Goenka emphasises that pivoting back to a multilingual approach is a response to evolving market dynamics. As OTT consumption grows in smaller towns and regions, ZEE5 aims to leverage its foundational emphasis on language diversity. The platform plans a massive increase in production, targeting the launch of over 120 new titles in FY26—more than double what is expected in FY25.

Acknowledging Bollywood’s global appeal, Goenka points out ZEE5’s unique strength in providing exclusive movie releases. The language strategy extends internationally, catering to diaspora communities with tailored content. For instance, audiences in the Middle East primarily prefer Malayalam, while those in the U.S. Bay Area often lean towards Telugu and Tamil. The interface intelligently adapts based on user location, ensuring a personalised experience.

This transformation goes beyond content alone. ZEE5 is committed to enhancing its overall user experience in different regions. As Goenka articulates, viewers worldwide will encounter distinctly varied experiences tailored to their linguistic preferences. Recent initiatives include launching original Kannada content with “Ayyana Mane” and expanding into Marathi, Malayalam, and Bengali languages.

ZEE5 also explores new genres, moving beyond traditional family dramas to include crime and thriller stories that resonate with international audiences. Unlike competitors who heavily invest in growth at any cost, ZEE5 has achieved positive cash flow globally—an impressive feat in today’s high-cost acquisition environment.

Goenka highlights ZEE5’s robust financial discipline, noting significant loss reductions and a strong focus on becoming EBITDA-positive across global markets. The platform’s performance metrics are tailored to different market structures, balancing subscription-based and ad-supported models.

In a forward-thinking move, ZEE5 is preparing for the future of storytelling through vertical formats. It has partnered with startup Bullet to explore this innovative approach, positioning the platform for the next wave of digital engagement.
