Kenya: Starlink’s Satellite Internet User Base Increases Tenfold In One Year – Report

July 21, 2024

A A

In less than a year since its launch in July 2023, Starlink, Elon Musk’s satellite internet service, has experienced an explosive growth in its user base in Kenya. The Communications Authority (CA) reports that the number of satellite internet users in the country has skyrocketed from 405 before Starlink’s entry to an impressive 4,808 by March 2024.

The rapid adoption of Starlink in Kenya can be largely attributed to its groundbreaking high internet speeds, which surpass 100 megabits per second (Mbps). This makes it an irresistible choice for customers in areas where traditional broadband providers are unavailable, significantly altering the landscape of internet access.

The CA’s report highlights the significant impact of Starlink’s debut on the broader adoption of broadband services in Kenya. The sector is expected to continue growing with the introduction of new technologies and services.

Currently, over 93% of satellite internet users in Kenya are subscribed to high-speed internet plans, ranging from 100 Mbps to 1 gigabit per second (Gbps), exclusively provided by Starlink. This shows a shift towards higher speeds compared to traditional internet options available in the country.

Starlink’s success in Kenya can be attributed to its capacity to serve customers underserved by traditional broadband providers, particularly in remote areas. Its ability to bridge the connectivity gap has significantly influenced its rapid adoption among Kenyan users.

Despite being Kenya’s newest major satellite service provider, Starlink faces competition from providers such as Skynet and NTvsat. Additionally, Safaricom, Kenya’s largest telecommunications company, has yet to launch its satellite service, giving Starlink the opportunity to consolidate its position in the market.
