SABA Convention 2024: Adaptive Regulatory And Policy Regimes For Converged Ecosystem

As the forthcoming 8th Broadcast and Digital Media Convention – Africa 2024 approaches, taking place from October 8-10 in the picturesque city of Swakopmund, Namibia, the theme of regulatory and policy changes in a converged media landscape becomes increasingly pertinent. The digital age has revolutionised how we consume, produce, and interact with media, necessitating a reevaluation of existing regulatory frameworks to address the unique challenges and opportunities of a converged world.

Media convergence refers to merging traditional media platforms, such as television and radio, with digital and online platforms. This phenomenon has been driven by technological advancements, changing consumer preferences, and the proliferation of internet-enabled devices. As a result, the lines between different forms of media have blurred, creating a dynamic and interconnected media ecosystem.

Hosted by the Namibia Broadcasting Corporation and convened by Broadcast Media Africa (BMA) and the Southern African Broadcasting Association (SABA), this summit offers a unique platform to explore the evolving regulatory and policy landscape in a converged world.

Commenting on this, Mr Stanly Similo, Director General of NBC (the event Host and co-convener), said, “As media continues to evolve, so must the regulatory frameworks governing it. By embracing adaptive and forward-thinking approaches, regulators can foster an innovative, inclusive, and equitable media environment, ensuring that the benefits of media convergence are realised for all. Swakopmund, with its stunning coastal beauty, will be the perfect backdrop for this crucial dialogue. Attendees can look forward to engaging discussions, insightful presentations, and collaborative efforts that will shape the future of media regulation in Africa and beyond.”
