Azam TV Launches New Programme To Boost Tanzanian Football

In a major advancement for Tanzanian football, the National Bank of Commerce (NBC) has partnered with Azam TV to launch “Kona ya NBC,” an innovative football analysis show designed to enhance fan engagement and foster economic growth in the sport. This groundbreaking initiative marks a pivotal development in Tanzania’s football landscape.

The program debuted at Century Cinemax Mlimani City, with prominent figures in the football community in attendance, including NBC Managing Director Theobald Sabi, Tanzania Premier League Board (TPLB) CEO Cornel Barnabas, and Azam Media’s Head of Public Relations, Christina Korosso. The event attracted former players and media professionals, all captivated by a stadium-like atmosphere, as it was broadcast live on Azam TV.

Sabi highlighted that this initiative goes beyond traditional sponsorship methods, focusing on creating sustainable economic frameworks surrounding football. “What we’re launching with ‘Kona ya NBC’ expands football’s value chain—linking players, clubs, media, and businesses. This initiative fosters job creation, innovation, and youth empowerment,” he stated.

The launch is part of NBC’s ongoing investment strategy in Tanzanian football, which has surpassed US$13 million since 2023. This financial backing has strengthened competitive structures across various levels, from the NBC Premier League to youth tournaments, improving club stability and enriching the fan experience.

Drawing comparisons to established European leagues like Germany’s Bundesliga and England’s Premier League, Sabi noted their potential to drive economic growth through sectors such as tourism and employment.

For Azam TV, this partnership opens up a new realm of content innovation. “This platform connects everyone within the football ecosystem, linking on-pitch actions to conversations in homes across Tanzania,” Korosso remarked. “Our goal is to elevate sports storytelling and foster deeper connections with the game.”

Cornel Barnabas, CEO of the TPLB, views the NBC initiative as transformative, raising competitive standards and providing pathways for emerging young talent. “Kona ya NBC” airs weekly on Mondays at 7 pm on Azam Sports HD 1, with repeat shows on Tuesdays, potentially reaching over 14 million viewers—making it one of East Africa’s largest platforms for football analysis.

As international interest in Tanzanian football grows, this media-financial partnership may serve as a blueprint for other African countries aiming to develop their leagues and establish sustainable economic models around sports.
