Measuring The Modern Listener – Moving Beyond Traditional Radio Ratings To Actionable Audience Intelligence

As the radio broadcasting landscape continues to evolve in response to digital disruption and shifting audience behaviours, industry leaders will convene to explore one of the sector’s most pressing challenges: accurately measuring and understanding the modern listener.

This critical conversation will take centre stage at the Radio Broadcasters Convention – Africa 2026, scheduled to take place on 01 – 02 July 2026 at THE VENUE, GREEN PARK, Johannesburg, South Africa.

For decades, traditional radio ratings have served as the primary benchmark for audience measurement. However, in an era defined by multi-platform consumption, streaming, podcasts, and on-demand audio, these legacy metrics are no longer sufficient. Broadcasters are now being called upon to adopt more dynamic and data-driven approaches that deliver deeper insights into listener behaviour, preferences, and engagement patterns.

The session, “Measuring The Modern Listener – Moving Beyond Traditional Radio Ratings To Actionable Audience Intelligence,” will examine how broadcasters can transition from static measurement models to real-time, actionable audience intelligence systems. Industry experts will unpack the limitations of traditional ratings frameworks and highlight emerging tools that integrate data from digital platforms, mobile applications, and social engagement.

As competition for audience attention intensifies, understanding not just how many people are listening, but how, when, and why they engage with content has become a strategic imperative. The discussion will explore how advanced analytics, AI-driven insights, and cross-platform measurement techniques are enabling broadcasters to make smarter programming, marketing, and monetisation decisions.

Participants will gain valuable perspectives on building unified audience measurement strategies that reflect today’s hybrid listening environment. From leveraging first-party data to integrating third-party analytics and audience segmentation tools, the session will provide practical guidance on turning raw data into meaningful, revenue-driving intelligence.

As advertisers increasingly demand precise targeting and measurable outcomes, the ability to deliver credible, granular audience insights is becoming a key differentiator for radio broadcasters. This session will also address how enhanced measurement capabilities can strengthen advertiser confidence and unlock new commercial opportunities.

The Radio Broadcasters Convention – Africa 2026 will bring together leading broadcasters, technology providers, regulators, and content creators from across the continent to discuss the future of radio in Africa. As the industry undergoes rapid transformation, the event offers a vital platform for knowledge sharing, innovation, and strategic collaboration.
