Ster-Kinekor is set to delight moviegoers this April with its “Throwback Cinema” event, offering a lineup of classic films for just US$3 per ticket. The initiative aims to rekindle the magic of beloved movies on the big screen, and new titles will be introduced throughout the month.

Starting on April 3, audiences can enjoy the animated favourite Shrek Forever After. Originally released in 2010, this film marks the fourth entry in DreamWorks’ iconic series. Now a father of triplets, Shrek makes a questionable deal with Rumpelstiltskin in an attempt to regain his former life, leading to unforeseen challenges. This screening serves as an introduction to the Shrek series for younger fans, especially with the highly anticipated Shrek 5 set to premiere on June 30, 2027, featuring the return of the original cast and Zendaya.

On the same day, Julia Roberts’ “Eat Pray Love” will be screened. The film, directed by Ryan Murphy, captures Roberts’ journey of self-discovery following a difficult divorce. It features a talented cast including Javier Bardem, Viola Davis, and Richard Jenkins.

From April 10, audiences can relive the musical “Grease”, starring Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta. The 1978 classic recounts the summer romance between good girl Sandy and greaser Danny as they navigate high school dynamics. With its catchy songs and iconic performances, Grease is sure to entertain both returning fans and newcomers alike.

“Up”, the beloved Pixar film, makes a return on April 24. This heartwarming story follows an older man and a young boy as they embark on an unforgettable adventure, using humour and emotional depth to resonate with audiences of all ages. Originally released in 2009, it has garnered tremendous acclaim and box office success.

Also on April 24, the renowned Christmas classic “It’s a Wonderful Life” will be screened. Directed by Frank Capra, the film tells the story of George Bailey, a man in despair who learns the value of life with the help of a guardian angel.

Ster-Kinekor’s Throwback Cinema is designed to make classic films accessible at an affordable price, blending a variety of genres to ensure enjoyment for all. Available at multiple locations, including cinemas in Johannesburg, Tshwane, Gqeberha, and the Western Cape, this initiative is a perfect way to revisit cherished films or experience them for the first time.
