Malawi: Regulator Set To Boost Content Creation With New Monetisation Initiative

Malawi is gearing up to introduce a monetisation initiative for content creators through a new partnership with Meta and TikTok. Engagement with these platforms is set to commence in April, with the first event scheduled for April 16 in Lilongwe, as announced by the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) over the weekend.

Content creators interested in participating are encouraged to apply; the application deadline is April 8. MACRA believes this initiative will not only enhance revenue opportunities for local creators through content monetisation but also enable the government to benefit from value-added tax, increase youth employment, stimulate digital entrepreneurship, and encourage greater participation in the global digital economy.

“This is your chance to join a pivotal discussion about content monetisation and help define its impact on creators across the country,” MACRA extended the invitation to local content makers.

This announcement comes shortly after Finance Minister Joseph Mwanamvekha presented the 2026-2027 National Budget, which included plans to engage with global digital platform operators to explore revenue opportunities. During his budget speech, Mwanamvekha indicated that the government would initiate structured negotiations with international digital platforms to establish regulatory and fiscal frameworks to harness the benefits of the digital economy, encompassing areas such as taxation, innovation support, and local enterprise participation.

In a related development, Dr Shadric Namalomba, the Minister of Information and Communications Technology, visited MACRA’s headquarters in Blantyre to assess the progress of key projects tied to the government’s digitalisation efforts to advance Malawi’s digital economy. Namalomba emphasised the need for stronger collaboration between government entities to enhance efficiency and eliminate redundant initiatives.

“Projects are being executed in isolation. Government institutions must collaborate for greater collective success in the digitalisation drive,” he urged.
