Nigeria: Starlink Reopens New Orders

February 27, 2026

A A

Starlink has resumed accepting new orders in key Nigerian cities, including Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt. However, it is currently offering only its more expensive business tier, making it a premium option for consumers in regions where demand exceeds supply.

Previously, the satellite internet service owned by Elon Musk had halted new activations due to capacity constraints.

The recent updates indicate that personal home kits are unavailable, with the platform now exclusively offering “Starlink for Business” subscriptions. The business package includes a monthly fee of US$99.38, plus hardware costs that can reach US$1,575, including delivery and applicable taxes.

The pre-order website states, “Due to high demand in your area, only priority plans are available.”

Starlink for Business promises high-speed, low-latency satellite internet designed for enterprises, delivering download speeds of 100–350 Mbps, 24/7 priority technical support, and robust hardware engineered for reliability and consistent connectivity.

While its peak speeds may not always rival those of top residential packages, Starlink’s advantage lies in its reliability and ability to handle higher usage.

By prioritising business customers, Starlink is effectively managing capacity while also enhancing revenue potential; however, there has been no indication of when residential sales will recommence.

In a broader context, tech analyst Pius Paul recently highlighted on X that the global price of Starlink hardware has decreased to US$199, representing a 67% drop. That free or heavily discounted terminals are being provided to partners as part of a market penetration strategy.

Paul suggested that if costs in Nigeria fell to US$33, satellite internet could compete with fibre for last-mile connectivity, reaching millions across the country.

Yet, some local users have noted that MTN Fibre X offers faster, more affordable broadband services in certain areas, underscoring the ongoing competition between satellite and fibre internet service providers.
