South Africa: Vodacom Partners With Starlink For Internet Access Across Africa

Vodacom Group has announced a partnership with Starlink to provide high-speed, low-latency broadband internet to millions of businesses across Africa, while also enhancing rural network coverage.

This collaboration is a significant step towards bridging the digital divide and fostering new opportunities for economic growth, education, and innovation throughout the continent.

“We are thrilled to team up with Starlink, which advances our mission to connect every African to the internet,” said Shameel Joosub, CEO of Vodacom Group.

“Low Earth orbit satellite technology will help close the digital gap in areas where traditional infrastructure is impractical, making this partnership a gateway to new opportunities for those currently unconnected.”

Chad Gibbs, vice president of Starlink operations at SpaceX, noted that Starlink is already serving people, businesses, and organisations in 25 African nations.

“By working with Vodacom, Starlink can extend reliable, high-speed connectivity to an even larger customer base, transforming lives and communities across the continent,” he stated.

Vodacom emphasised that this agreement complements its existing terrestrial network and will significantly impact the region.

“Integrating Starlink’s satellite backhaul into Vodacom’s mobile network will accelerate network expansion while enhancing performance in rural areas,” the company noted.

“This collaboration will provide strong connectivity to remote schools, health centres, and communities, empowering millions with access to digital services and vital information.”

As part of the agreement, Vodacom will be authorised to resell Starlink equipment and services to both enterprise and small business customers in Africa. They also plan to develop localised value propositions tailored to meet the unique needs and affordability requirements of the African market.

“By engaging with clients across various industries—including mining, oil and gas, agriculture, tourism, retail, and financial services—we have crafted a range of relevant products,” Vodacom explained.

“Utilising both terrestrial and space-based technologies, our offerings include pay-as-you-go backup internet, 100% reliable internet, device-as-a-service, and branch network pooling.”

Vodacom stated that this alignment fits within its Vision 2030 strategy, aiming to expand its customer base to 260 million and its financial services customers to 120 million within five years.

“With Starlink as a complementary layer, Vodacom is progressing towards universal coverage and reaffirming its commitment to connecting people for a brighter future.”
