Ghana: MTN CEO Highlights Pivotal Role In Africa’s Digital Transformation

MTN Group CEO Ralph Mupita has praised Ghana for its crucial role in shaping Africa’s digital landscape.

Concluding a two-day visit to Accra, the capital of Ghana, Mupita highlighted that the West African nation is among MTN Group’s most important markets, significantly contributing to the company’s robust half-year figures for 2025.

“Ghana has played a vital role in achieving these results. Without MTN Ghana, our Group results would not be as impressive,” Mupita stated during the MTN Bright Conversations series. The company reported a 4.7% increase in subscribers across Africa, with growth driven primarily by data and financial technology services.

Mupita asserted that Ghana is integral to MTN’s status as Africa’s largest mobile operator and essential for the Group’s expansion plans.

“Ghana is more than just a market for MTN; it is a crucial partner in Africa’s digital advancement. The initiatives we pursue here will influence how millions across the continent connect, trade, and innovate. This is where Africa’s digital narrative takes an important leap forward,” he remarked.

He urged governments and industry stakeholders to take decisive action on 5G implementation, enhance cyber resilience, and promote digital inclusion to fully harness the potential of the rapidly growing digital economy.

Discussing the spectrum issue, Mupita noted that Ghana is currently the only major MTN market without access to 5G, although discussions with the Ministry of Communications and Digitalisation are ongoing. “While we have made significant improvements in 3G and 4G, reaching 5G is crucial,” he stated.

The MTN Group CEO emphasised the transformative potential of 5G technology for applications needing low latency in sectors such as mining, logistics, and reliable home broadband services.

He also addressed consumer concerns regarding service affordability, noting that operators must strike a balance between substantial capital investment and effective pricing strategies. “Numerous factors need to align to enhance affordability and expand service offerings,” he added.

Mobile money continues to grow significantly, boasting 63 million users across MTN’s markets. Although MTN does not currently consider itself a bank, Mupita indicated that acquiring a banking license could be possible in response to customer demand.

“As we look beyond 2025, we are excited about the opportunities leading up to 2030. The next growth phase will rely on creating environments that attract investment, enhance infrastructure, and protect users from increasing cyber threats,” he concluded.
