YouTube And Fox Secure Distribution Deal, Ensuring Access To Key Channels For Subscribers

YouTube and Fox have announced that they have successfully negotiated a distribution agreement, ensuring that channels such as Fox News, Fox Sports, and other Fox offerings will continue to be available on YouTube TV. This deal follows an earlier short-term extension that was put in place to maintain service for YouTube TV subscribers during negotiations.

In a statement provided to CNBC, YouTube expressed satisfaction with the outcome, stating, “We’re pleased to have reached a deal that preserves the value of our service for our subscribers.” However, neither party has yet to disclose the financial specifics of the agreement.

Last week, YouTube reported that Fox had requested fees significantly higher than those typically requested from partners with similar content. This standoff coincided with Fox’s launch of Fox One, a new standalone streaming service priced at US$19.99 per month or US$199.99 annually.

Without a deal in place, YouTube warned that it could remove Fox’s channels from its platform by 5 p.m. ET on Wednesday. This could have resulted in subscribers missing key events, such as a crucial college football game featuring Texas and Ohio State, as well as the kickoff of the upcoming NFL season.

Brendan Carr, chair of the Federal Communications Commission, commented positively on the agreement, stating, “This is great news for college football fans and avoids blackouts. Enjoy the games this weekend!” in a post on X.

With approximately 9.4 million subscribers, YouTube TV compensates broadcasters, such as Fox, for streaming their channels. In addition to American football, Fox also broadcasts Major League Baseball games and the World Series, which is set to commence in late October.

The monthly base subscription for YouTube TV is $82.99, providing access to over 100 live channels. According to Nielsen, YouTube leads the U.S. media distribution landscape in audience engagement, capturing more than 13% of television watch time in July.
