Google Launches US$1 Million AI Film Competition With City Of Dubai

Dubai is set to launch a US$1 million competition for short films created wholly through artificial intelligence, in partnership with Google’s Gemini. This initiative is part of the upcoming 1 Billion Followers Summit. It represents one of the largest global contests of its kind, underscoring the growing importance of AI in the creative sector.

The grand prize will be awarded to the best film, and the top ten entries will be showcased during the fourth edition of the summit, scheduled for January 9-11, 2026, in Dubai. The UAE Government Media Office, behind the event, stated that the competition aims to illustrate how AI can revolutionise filmmaking. The judging criteria will emphasise creativity, realism, technical execution, storytelling, and the capacity to convey humanitarian messages.

All submissions must be entirely created using AI technology. More information regarding submission guidelines will be provided next month. “The Summit seeks to inspire and promote the creation of meaningful films utilising various AI tools, raise awareness about the humanitarian themes these films should express, and enhance creative abilities, aesthetic vision, and advanced skills in utilising AI in film production,” the announcement read. Organisers noted that short films were chosen due to their effectiveness in delivering powerful messages concisely.

UAE Minister of Cabinet Affairs Mohammad Al-Gergawi referred to this initiative as part of the nation’s larger effort to promote the global “content economy.” He remarked, “The content economy represents an economic force with endless potential. The UAE is not only keeping pace with its advancements but is also leading and forging new paths within this sector.”

To further reinforce this vision, the UAE has earmarked $13.6 million to support creative projects led by content creators. This funding will be directed towards initiatives that have both cultural and economic significance, helping to establish companies spearheaded by content creators and creative technology innovators. Additionally, another $13.6 million will be allocated to assist startups and creators in pitching their projects to top investors and corporations, with sponsorship and investment opportunities available for the most promising concepts.

The 1 Billion Followers Summit, themed “Content for Good,” will bring together prominent content creators, tech leaders, industry professionals, and entrepreneurs worldwide. The 2026 summit is expected to feature 400 speakers boasting a collective following of over three billion, creating a global platform that fosters collaboration, innovation, and opportunities for creators to expand internationally.
