Botswana: How Satellite Connectivity Is Transforming Remote Communities

June 4, 2025
Reading Time: 2 mins read
A A

Across Africa, satellite technology opens new doors for connectivity, especially in remote areas lacking traditional infrastructure like fibre or mobile networks. Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites are driving a digital revolution, offering access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities for communities often left behind.

This reliable, high-speed internet is vital for many African industries, enhancing efficiency, market access, and competitiveness. Pan-African technology company Liquid Intelligent Technologies has partnered with Eutelsat/OneWeb, the world’s first GEO-LEO satellite operator, to deliver LEO services to some of Africa’s most remote regions.

In Botswana, LEO connectivity is invaluable across sectors—from humanitarian work to defence and public outreach. For example, during a UNICEF event in Mochudi village, LEO ensured stable internet throughout the day for smooth communication. At a Botswana Defence Force exhibition, around 2,000 users accessed the internet via LEO satellites, showcasing its potential in remote military locations. On Safer Internet Day 2025, the Ministry of Communications and Innovation used LEO in Tshesebe to promote digital participation and event visibility, highlighting its role in inclusive connectivity.

As of January 2024, 77% of Botswana’s population had internet access. With LEO’s broad coverage, this is set to rise, connecting more rural and isolated communities. Liquid is committed to bridging Botswana’s digital divide and supporting the government’s Vision 2036 goals by empowering citizens through digital transformation.

Satellite connectivity is perfect for areas without fibre or mobile coverage. It delivers high-speed internet that supports businesses and vital industries like mining, agriculture, and tourism. LEO satellites’ low latency benefits real-time applications such as video conferencing and telemedicine, while mobile users in transport and aviation enjoy continuous connectivity.

The technology’s resilience means fewer disruptions, enabling the uptake of innovations like IoT, 5G, and AI. Beyond connectivity, LEO offers enterprise solutions, including Point-to-Point services, providing flexible and reliable internet access.

Ultimately, LEO satellite technology connects Botswana today, setting the foundation for a more inclusive digital future across Africa.
