Nigeria Set To Introduce Groundbreaking AI Guidelines To Foster Responsible Technology Development

In an effort to embrace digital transformation, Lagos State has announced intentions to publish Nigeria’s first Artificial Intelligence (AI) guidelines, paving the path for responsible technology use.

Olatubosun Alake, the Lagos State commissioner for innovation, science, and technology, announced the idea at the 4th Zenith Bank Tech Fair in Lagos.

According to Alake, the regulations are being prepared in partnership with the Federal AI Collective and are expected to be completed in the first or second quarter of next year.

He said: “This initiative will pave the way for responsible AI development in Nigeria, reflecting the state’s commitment to innovation and technological progress.

“Our digital initiative, including our enterprise architecture project, is standardising and harmonising our digital data assets for effective AI implementation.”

He went on to say” “This effort is crucial for delivering tailored services to our citizens and ensuring we are ready for the AI onslaught.”

“AI’s impact will be felt whether we are prepared for it or not, making platforms (Zenith Bank Tech Fair) like this essential for fostering a proactive approach.”

Furthermore, through the Science Research and Innovation Council, Lagos State is financing AI initiatives at local universities such as the University of Lagos and Lagos State.

The Council funds these projects to increase academic contributions to the AI, blockchain, and infrastructure development sectors.

Speaking on a panel, Oladejo Olawunmi, director of information technology infrastructure solutions at the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), underscored the relevance of AI legislation and the agency’s role in developing a legal framework for AI.

“When we discuss AI, we are talking about transparency, trust, and data security. At NITDA, we bring stakeholders together to draft regulations that will guide the industry,” he said.

NITDA is currently developing the National AI Strategy, which includes discussions with local and foreign experts about the future direction of AI in Nigeria.

“This comprehensive approach aims to ensure that the country not only keeps up with global AI developments but also creates a strong regulatory environment to support long-term growth,” Olawunmi added.
