Nigeria’s satellite operator and the continent’s broadcasting union are doubling down on their partnership. NIGCOMSAT (Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited) and the African Union of Broadcasting (AUB) have reaffirmed their plans to work more closely together on digital broadcasting, satellite communications, and connecting more of Africa.
The renewed commitment resulted from a working visit to NIGCOMSAT’s Abuja headquarters by AUB’s Director-General and CEO, Gregoire Ndjaka, who was welcomed by NIGCOMSAT’s Managing Director and CEO, Jane Egerton-Idehen, along with her management team.
While there, the AUB delegation got a firsthand look at NIGCOMSAT’s satellite infrastructure, walking through the company’s technical setup and the digital solutions it uses to support Nigeria’s communications and broadcasting sectors. The visit also gave both sides a chance to check in on Nigeria’s Digital Switch Over programme, the rollout expanding digital TV access and bringing better broadcasting quality to communities around the country.
Both organisations agreed on one thing in particular: satellite technology and strong partnerships aren’t optional extras; they’re central to building out Africa’s broadcasting ecosystem and closing the digital divide. Ndjaka and Egerton-Idehen pointed to closer cooperation between satellite operators and broadcasters as key to expanding connectivity, improving access to information, and supporting economic development across the continent.
NIGCOMSAT said it will continue using its satellites and technical expertise to connect people, support local industries, and help drive Africa’s digital transformation.
