Nigeria Strengthens Data Privacy In Broadcasting Through New Partnership

The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) and the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) have formalised their commitment to enhancing data protection and privacy in the broadcasting sector by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This collaboration aims to bolster compliance and promote regulatory cooperation between the two agencies.

This agreement marks a pivotal development in ongoing efforts to improve governance frameworks for data management, privacy, and the responsible use of digital technologies in Nigeria.

At the signing ceremony, NDPC’s national commissioner and CEO, Vincent Olatunji, highlighted the partnership as a vital move towards elevating data protection standards across the country. He praised the NBC for fostering inter-agency collaboration, emphasising the critical roles both organisations play across various sectors of the Nigerian economy.

Olatunji stated that enhanced cooperation among regulators is crucial for fostering trust in Nigeria’s digital economy, supporting government initiatives to drive innovation and economic growth, and facilitating digital transformation. He noted the increasing importance of robust privacy frameworks as businesses, governmental bodies, and consumers increasingly rely on digital services.

NBC Director-General Charles Ebuebu acknowledged the evolving significance of data in broadcasting, noting that streaming platforms, digital content providers, and algorithm-driven services are redefining how audiences consume media. He asserted that this partnership would enhance the NBC’s regulatory capabilities and align Nigeria’s broadcasting sector with international standards and best practices concerning data privacy and governance.

The agreement also establishes a joint working group to oversee the implementation of the MoU and coordinate collaborative initiatives. This partnership signifies growing recognition among Nigerian regulators that effective digital governance requires coordinated oversight as the technology, media, and digital services sectors continue to expand and generate greater volumes of consumer data.
